After Riri Williams’ Ironheart character was introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, we now have the first look at her starring role in her own series on Disney+. Watch the first trailer for Ironheart below.
The upcoming series will give us proper introduction to Riri Williams’ character, played by Dominque Thorne, as she navigates the challenges of creating her own legacy after a taste of the hero life. The MIT student from Chicago returns home to face all the realities of a teenager despite her vast abilities and achievements, all whilst trying to break free from the shadows of Tony Stark and the Ironman mantel.
Her pursuits for greatness find her swept up with the seemingly friend and eventual foe of villain “The Hood”, played by Anthony Ramos. The mysterious, dark-magic-wielding figure challenges Riri’s beliefs about science and magic as well as the cost of pursuing more. The narrative theme of the balance between science and sorcery is clear throughout the trailer and seems like a key point in the series based on the presentation of our hero and antagonist.
Michael Coogler is also front and center as one of the executive producers of the series. Given Coogler’s credit for introducing Riri Williams into the MCU it seems only fitting that he has some sort of collaboration with the character, how much impact of creative input he has over the rest of the series remains a mystery. Given Coogler’s recent success with his film Sinners, it does make sense that they would want to use any input from him in the marketing campaign.
We’ll have to wait and see just how much of Coogler’s influence can be felt when the show premiers with the first three episodes dropping on Disney+ on the 24th of June.
