Marvel reveals huge lineup for Avengers: Doomsday

James Whitehead

Development on the next installment in the Avengers franchise is well under way. After Marvel’s big announcement at this year’s Comic Con, we had a title, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. And we had a villain, with Robert Downey Jr returning to play an alternate version of Tony Stark who embodies the title of Doctor Doom. But, after that, we had no cast. Well that just changed in a very literal, big way…

On their social media accounts, Marvel livestreamed an event which lasted for almost 5 hours, slowly drip feeding the names of the stars involved in the film. Whilst we’re very sure they’re still going to announce some more, over the course of the live stream event, they confirmed 26 actors that would be involved. Yes, 26.

So, get comfy as I’m going to list every actor- and the character they’re most likely playing.

Starting off with the returning MCU staples, the cast includes:

  • Chris Hemsworth, as Thor
  • Sebastian Stan, as Bucky
  • Anthony Mackie, as Captain America
  • Letitia Wright, as Shuri
  • Paul Rudd, as Antman
  • Wyatt Russel, as U.S Agent
  • Tenoch Huerta Mejia, as Namor
  • Simu Liu, as Shang Chi
  • Florence Pugh, as Yelena Belova
  • Danny Ramirez, as Falcon
  • Channing Tatum, as Gambit
  • David Harbour, as Red Guardian
  • Winston Duke, as M’baku
  • Hannah John-Kamen, as Ghost
  • Tom Hiddlestone, as Loki
  • Robert Downey Jr, as Tony Stark and Dr Doom

As well as these established favourites we have a couple new MCU characters; ones that we will be introduced to before Doomsday comes out. This includes:

  • Lewis Pullman, as Sentry, coming in Thunderbolts*
  • Vaness Kirby, as Sue Storm in Fantastic Four: First Steps
  • Ebon Moss-Bacharach, as The Thing in Fantastic Four: First Steps
  • Joseph Quin, as Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four: First Steps
  • Pedro Pascal, as Reed Richards in Fantastic Four: First Steps.

With both these films coming in 2025 we will get to see them in action and hopefully understand better how their story connects to Avengers: Doomsday. Naturally, with Doctor Doom originating as a Fantastic Four villain, it’s expected to be a large part of the story line and directly connecting us to the next Avengers film.

Now, for those of you who are keeping count, there’s still 6 more names to go. That’s because Marvel isn’t just bringing back some favourites form their own universe, but they’re using this multiverse tale to bring back some of the original X-Men characters back from the early 2000’s Fox films.

Making their first appearances in the MCU, well except for Patrick Stewart anyway, we’ll see

  • Kelsey Grammer, as Beast
  • Patrick Stewart, as Professor X
  • Sir Ian Mckellen, as Magneto,
  • Alan Cumming, as Nightcrawler
  • Rebbeca Romijn, as Mystique
  • James Marsden, as Cyclops.

Okay, you can relax now, that’s all the names. Scarily enough though, with over a year out, I fully expect to hear about even more announcements and actors as we approach this behemoth of a film. How the Russo brothers plan on juggling so many main characters in one film will be very intriguing. Is it truly possible to make a film with so many leads and not have it feeling overly bloated?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has stumbled along in recent years. Post Avengers: Endgame, there’s been a clear void in star power and overall direction, but at the very least, now it seems like they have a plan about how to bring a lot of these threads to a satisfying conclusion, whilst also knowing where they want to go next. A plan is a plan, even if it’s incredibly ambitious. But with all the talent in the world to make it happen, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be an epic event.
