New Jurassic World: Rebirth trailer brings the terror back to the franchise

It may be titled Rebirth, but the new trailer for Jurassic World goes back to its’ origins with a scarier, darker tone akin to the original Jurassic Park. A return to the original islands and a clear intention of capturing that fear and terror again as director Gareth Edwards directs this new sequel, scheduled to come out in July. Watch the final trailer for Jurassic World: Rebirth below.

Scarlett Johansson leads a covert team featuring Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey and Rupert Friend as they venture to one of the original untouched and hidden islands from the conception of the first Jurassic Park. The story features many familiar features from the franchise; a new island, military intervention, rescuing stranded civilians and scientific discovery as the motivation for it all.

Tonally there’s been a clear shift from the last Jurassic World films, original writer for Jurassic Park, David Koepp is back on board and penned the script alongside Gareth Edwards. This may prove to be the most significant move in restoring some of the fear and terror back into the franchise which has slowly been lost over the course of the last few films. The original books that inspired the films are noticeably darker in tone and delve much deeper into the scientific impacts, something it seems they want to lean towards in this new film.

One trope that can’t be escaped is the introduction of some new creature to help fuel those nightmares; in the trailer we see our first glances at some of the more experimental and volatile creations that never made the first park. None scarier than the new Distortus Rex or D-Rex as it’s coined. The six-limbed abomination blends all the worst features of a T-rex and a Rancor from Star Wars, demonstrating the extent of the experimentation that took place on the island. How any of our protagonists are meant to outlive that thing we will have to wait and see, but my fears are that some of these cool new cast members may not make the end of the film, with something like that being unleashed.

Luckily, we won’t have to wait much longer to see if any survive when Jurassic Park: Rebirth hits cinemas on the 2nd of July.
