Deadline has confirmed the long-awaited Spaceballs 2 has finally been announced by Mel Brooks for a 2027 release, with Bill Pulman’s Lone Starr and Rick Moranis’ Dark Helmet finally back on the big screen. Moranis making his first feature-length appearance for almost two decades as he reunites with his most iconic role, and headwear, to date.
It’s been 38 years since the original release of Spaceballs, and the announcement video recaps what’s been going on in the world of film since… in the way only Spaceballs could.
The promotional announcement consisted of a Star-Wars-style opening crawl, stating that when the first Spaceballs film was released there was only one Star Wars trilogy in existence, but now the sequel comes after:
-A prequel trilogy
-A sequel trilogy
-A sequel to the prequel
-A prequel to the sequel
-Countless TV spinoffs
-A movie spinoff of the TV spinoff which is both a prequel and a sequel
-2 Dunes
-7 Jurassic Parks
-2 Avatars plus 3 upcoming making 5 Avatars
-36 MCU Films with two different Robert Downey Jr’s
-DCU Attempt 1
-DCU Attempt 2
-An animated Lion King
-A live action animated Lion King
-A live action animated Lion King prequel
-8 Harry Potter movies
-A TV Series remaking the same 8 Harry Potter movies
-A whole streaming service for Star Trek
-7 Alien Movies (2 of which were Predator movies, not to be mistaken for the 6 Predator movies that are also not Alien movies)
-1 Prometheus (which is kind of an Alien movie)
-4 Beatles movies?
-and… Oppenheimer.
But in thirty-eight there has only ever been one… Spaceballs
Until now…
If you’re still here, then well done… This hilariously long, dragged-out crawl is the perfect conditioner to get us back in the Spaceballs mindset. Legendary director Mel Brooks returns with plenty of material to mine from at a time where we need more comedies in cinemas.
Whilst I’m not expecting a Spaceballs 2 to make hundreds of millions of Dollars at the box office, it’s such a positive step in the right direction to have a big budget, slapstick, comedy for us all to laugh and smile at together. Variety keeps cinemas alive and for every 10 intense dramas we get about the struggles of human condition, we also need a goofy comedy the remind us not to take everything so seriously. That’s why I can’t wait for Spaceballs 2 which is now officially coming in 2027.
