“At 2:17 AM in the morning, every kid, woke up, got out of bed, walked downstairs and into the dark… and they NEVER came back.”
Zach Cregger’s 2022 release The Barbarian, was one of the more intriguing, entertaining and frankly, messed up, horror films of recent years. It was an extremely present surprise with a film that felt as fresh as it was tense… Ever since, I’ve been excitedly waiting for his next project and with this new full-length trailer for Weapons, he may have a film even more terrifying than his last.
Watch the second trailer for Weapons, below.
Releasing on the 8th of August, the trailer promises one of the scariest films of the summer. A whole class of children disappear one night, a chilling premise in of itself, but the eeriness of the town and bizarre behaviour of the adults hint towards a much deeper, more sinister issue at play here.
Rarely do we see original Horror like this get a big summer push, but the confidence shown by the studio shouldn’t really come as any surprise. The director involved has already shown fantastic capabilities of bending terror and entertainment… The cast is stacked with talent. From Josh Brolin as a grieve-stricken parent, Julia Garner as the traumatised teacher and a strong ensemble featuring Alden Ehrenreich and Benedict Wong, everything is there to make something truly impactful.
The final big factor that gives me confidence in Weapons is the journey this film took to getting made. Never have I heard of such a competitive bidding war between studios to secure the rights to the story.
Jordan Peele was said to be devastated in losing out as he wanted Weapons to be his next film, resulting in him firing his management team such was the disappointment in missing out on the Weapons script… this is a pretty good sign that the story is as incredible as the trailer promises.
After all, New Line Cinema paid $38 million for the rights, which also helps to explain the summer release as they’re clearly hoping for a box office success as well as a critical one.
Luckily, we won’t have to wait long to see if the bidding war was worth it, as Weapons releases on the 8th of August.
