Universal gave us our first look at the second chapter of the Broadway musical adaptation by dropping the highly anticipated first official trailer for Wicked: For Good online.
Watch the trailer below:
Universal are looking to swiftly capitalise on the cultural phenomenon that was the first Wicked, with the emotional conclusion coming to screens on the 21st of November this year. This swift turnaround between the two-parts was a calculated move and only possible because the studio decided to film both parts back-to-back. This show of confidence in what they had has proven to be an extremely wise decision. The first chapter made over $750 million at the box office, racking up 10 Oscar nominations along the way.
Not only are they now ready to capitalise on this momentum with a swift follow-up, but financially it would have saved them a lot of money filming the two films back-to-back; a risky move in case the perception to the first wasn’t as good as they hoped for. But the fan and critical acclaim of the first film has shown what a shrewd and profitable move this was.
The trailer itself will give a lot of fans hope and excitement for the dramatic conclusion to this tale. The reintroductions of Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba and Ariana Grande’s Glinda show the weight of the events are from the first film are still present, their rift is palpable. Then, the subtle, yet unmistakable, chords from the “For Good” duet shifts the momentum in the trailer forward towards a larger world full of the Wizard of OZ iconography, including our first dramatic look at Dorothy and how she entangles with Elphaba.
The stage has been set for an emotional spectacle that looks to take the Broadway adaptation to new heights, defying gravity, one last time…
