“Star Wars: Starfighter” film announced at SWC

Over the weekend, fans who attended Lucasfilm’s bi-annual convention, “Star Wars Celebration” were treated to first looks at a host of new projects coming in the pipeline for Star Wars. From games to books to new animated shows, plenty was revealed to rapturous applause in the convention rooms. But, by far the biggest reveal from the weekend came in the announcement of a brand-new standalone Star Wars film, coming from director Shawn Levy, titled “Star Wars: Starfighter”.

Levy has recently experienced great success with Disney, who also own Lucasfilm, when he helmed Deadpool & Wolverine for Marvel last year. Since then, his name has been rumoured to be attached to Star Wars, before the official announcement came, late last year, that the filmmaker would be writing and directing a film in the Star Wars universe.

Since then, very little was revealed and with Lucasfilm’s recent track record of announcing films that never make it to screen, it was natural that a lot of fans were doubtful that Levy’s film would ever see the light of day. For now, it seems like a lot of those fears are unnecessary as we officially have a title, a release date and even the lead of the film has been cast.

Shawn Levy stood on stage and addressed rumours of Ryan Gosling being floated around for this film, stating “those rumours are… true.” Before the Canadian actor walked out onto the SWC stage to screams and applause from all those present.

Levy went on to say the film would be set 5 years after the events of the last theatrical release, “Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker”, but would also look to focus on a different corner of the universe, seemingly distancing himself from the characters and events of the sequel trilogy.

Whilst we wait to see what extent of the sequel films are mentioned, what we do know for now is that “Star Wars: Starfighter” is set to be released on the 28th of May, in 2027. For more updates and Star Wars news be sure to check out the TV and Film news section on our Hits Player.
